Irony

I’d like to recommend the song An Ironic Filk by my friend Nat. It is to the tune of Ironic by Alanis Morissette, hilariously highlighting how the only ironic thing about the song is how Alanis completely misunderstood the meaning of irony!

Irony’s about incongruity,
Not annoyances, mistakes or real tragedy …

  1. That video also highlights how the video director apparently had no idea what either irony or the song was about. Irony is… imagining three hyperactive infantile versions of yourself singing with you in the car while you drive?!

  2. irony (n): a pretense of ignorance and of willingness to learn from another assumed in order to make the other’s false conceptions conspicuous by adroit questioning

  3. Aha, that is the form of irony called Socratic Irony. As used by Socrates! :)

I learnt that in the last couple of days! :)

  4. See, my song is educational:

It’s not that good advice that you just didn’t take
It’s Socrates with his ignorance fake

It’s sarcasm when just meant in jest
Or feigning ignorance to put a theory to test
It’s when your meaning’s expressed rhetorically
It’s writing a song called Ironic, when the meaning’s just not irony
